Congratulations to FOL’s Certified Trail Clearing Team

This past weekend a dedicated group of Friends of Letchworth members got together to participate in the Game of Logging Certification with Bill Lindloff. This course taught members proper safety and maintenance of chainsaws as well as how to safely fell a tree and how to handle storm damage.

The purpose of the training was to help prepare FOL for their role in assisting with maintaining the 66 miles of trails that are within Letchworth State Park.

One of the first projects the newly trained volunteers will tackle is clearing trees and brush from an abandoned picnic area near the Parade Grounds on the east side of the river near Portageville. The stone picnic tables in this area are scheduled to be restored by 2019 through a New York State Environmental Protection grant to the Friends of Letchworth State Park.

The chainsaw training for Friends of Letchworth State Park volunteers was supported with funding from the New York State Park and Trail Partnership Program (NYSPTPP) and the New York State Environmental Protection Fund. NYSPTPP is administered by Parks and Trails New York in partnership with the State Office of Parks and Historic Restoration.

First Day Hike – Humphrey Nature Center – 1/1/2017

These walks search out the nature lore of the winter season as we examine trees, winter weeds and fungi and discover animal signs and tracks. (“In person” track makers are always a possibility.) For all of the hikes, it is suggested you dress for the weather. If snow gets “knee deep”, you may find it helpful to also bring your own snowshoes. (We will have a few snowshoes that may be borrowed.)

First Day Hikes – 2 choices on New Year’s Day

The hikes are scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm at The Humphrey Nature Center. Participants are urged to arrive half an hour early to register. Hot Chocolate & Cookies will follow at 3:00 pm. Two levels to choose from:

1) Families with younger children Winter Nature Walk with highlight: Letchworth CSI – Who Done It: Journey on a wooded loop less than one mile on nearly level terrain near The Humphrey Nature Center past, frozen bogs and the Trout Pond.

2) Families with older children Winter Nature Walk with highlight: Exotic Trees from Other Lands and State & National Champions: Two mile loop to Inspiration Point the Glen Iris Fountain and Middle Falls with more than 200′ descent and 200′ ascent along trails, roads and stairs.

End Of Summer Concert

summer-2

The last Summer concert series was a spectacular event! Great weather ended a great concert season.  The bands played crowd engaging music, face paintings, petting zoo, wildlife demonstrations and family fun for all.

The new Friends of Letchworth event tent was up and providing free shade and tables for those who happened upon the event and wanted to stay a while.  summer1

The Friends of Letchworth 50/50 raffle was the largest we ever had too!  With a total of $280 and the winner taking home $140, to which they graciously donated $40 back to FoLSP!

The “summer” season may be over but the fall colors are just warming up.  Be sure to stop by and visit our tent at the craft show this year and pick up your 2017 Calendar.
